Everybody is either waiting for Cam Newton to become the Best NFL Quarterback Ever of the Next JaMarcus Russell. You either love him or you hate him. For good or bad he has become the LeBron James of the NFL.

Those people who love him were ecstatic yesterday. Newton threw for 422 yards for 2 touchdowns and ran for another touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals. They will happily point out that no rookie QB have ever thrown for that many yards in their NFL debut. He looked poised and confident during the whole game, unlike, say, Tony Romo.

So, Cam Newton has arrived, right? This is the future of the NFL. We should hand him the Rookie of the Year award right now, correct?

Well, maybe not.

The Cardinals defense is a bit suspect and they really provided the perfect example of how not to defend Newton. They sent blitz after blitz and left their corners in man to man defense and Newton had some pretty simple reads. I think you will see every other team this season rush three or four players, keep everyone else back in coverage and make Cam read the defense and make decisions. Let’s not forget, he is still a rookie and has a lot to learn.

Remember, this is only one game. And teams will make adjustments to defend Newton. But that shouldn’t take away from a really great performance by the rookie. I’m just not ready to send him to the Hall of Fame after one game. Cam Newton can still go either way. If he had a horrible day, like Ben Roethlisberger had against Baltimore, the naysayers would be having a field day today.

So let’s all take a deep breath, sit back and let’s see how Cam Newton’s season plays out. And don’t forget, Arizona won that game. Putting up huge numbers is great for a quarterback but racking up win after win is even better. We’ll see how many wins Newton has at the end of the year.
