Why I Am Giving Up My Birthday This Year

Posted: July 23, 2012 in Uncategorized

I have never been big on birthdays. As I get older they simply remind me that I am getting older (and nobody wants to be reminded of that.)

So this year, I’m giving my birthday up.

This year instead of asking for gifts, I’m asking for donations for a great cause. The money is not going to me, though. All of it is going to build freshwater projects for people in developing countries.

Almost a billion people in the world are living without clean water — but how much are they really living? Millions contract deadly diseases from contaminated water. 30,000 people will die this week alone. The lucky ones won’t, but still have to walk hours each day to get dirty water for their families. It’s a daily struggle.

These people cannot survive without clean water. It’s easy for us to simply go the the faucet and get clean, safe water. It is something that we all take for granted.

I have been blessed enough. I get to sit at home and write about sports all day. I get paid to do what I love. And I get to interact with some really great people. It’s time that I start giving back. My birthday wish this year is not for more gifts I don’t need; it’s to give clean and safe drinking water to some of the billion people living without it. I want to make my birthday matter this year.

Just know that 100% of all donations go directly toward water projects. And about 18 months after this campaign ends, charity: water will show us where and how every dollar we raised ended up helping in the field. We’ll see GPS coordinates, photos and more details about the communities we’ve impacted.

  1. Let me know if that giving up the birthday thing also keeps the numbers from scrolling!
