Posts Tagged ‘Lamar Odom’

Two years ago Lamar Odom was razing the Larry O’Brien Trophy and celebrating his second consecutive NBA Championship. Last Year he was voted Sixth Man of the Year. This year he’s out of a job.

When the Dallas Mavericks sent him packing a few days ago everyone was talking about what a waste of talent Lamar has become.

I think that’s incredibly unfair to Odom. In my opinion, he is still a great talent. He is the most versatile player in the league. Name me one other player that can play all five positions. I’ll wait.

When you look at everything that Lamar has gone through off the court you may have a different view of him. It’s amazing that he has made it this far. His mother passed away when he was a child. His father was a junkie. He’s had to bury a child. He’s lost many family members in the last few years. Just recently his father, who he had somewhat reconciled with, was very ill. He has dealt with issues that would have buried many of his critics.

I honestly think that getting traded from the Lakers broke his heart. And I’m talking about the trade to New Orleans that NBA commissioner David Stern vetoed. Even though he’s been on different teams during his career, I think Lamar finally felt at home with the Lakers. All of his needs were met on that team. Losing them was like losing his family all over again.

Lamar Odom is an emotional person. He always has been and will always be. And that’s fine. Most people don’t understand that type of personality, but I do.  I truly believe that if he somehow returns to the Lakers he will be the great player that he always has been.

He was recently seen leaving Dallas wearing his Lakers championship t-shirt and a lot has been made of that. Maybe he was sending a message or maybe he just felt most comfortable in Lakers gear.

Some team will give Odom a chance to vindicate himself next season, you can bet on that. The only question that remains is, will it be a team that Lamar will feel comfortable playing for?

As if the Lakers haven’t had enough drama this season with all the failed trade attempts and losing Lamar Odom to the Dallas Mavericks it seems that things just got worse.

TMZ is reporting that Vanessa Bryant has filed for divorce.

Sources connected with the couple tell TMZ … Vanessa — who stuck by Kobe after he was charged with sexually assaulting a Colorado woman in 2003 — decided to end the marriage because she believes Kobe has been unfaithful … again.

As one source puts it, “She’s been dealing with these incidents for a long time and has been a faithful wife, but she’s finally had enough,” adding, “This one is the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

This might explain why Kobe has been in such a bad mood lately.

One of the most shocking revelations is that Kobe and Vanessa didn’t have a prenup!

There is no telling how this will affect the Lakers season but it can’t be good. This going to get ugly before it gets better.

I know it’s early in the season but I think the Lakers need to put some feelers out to see what they can get in a trade involving Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum. We have to shake this team up somehow.

You think I’m overreacting? Haven’t you heard what happened?? The Lakers have lost TWO games! In a row!!

The ThreePeat is doomed! We might as well give the title to those goofballs in South Beach. It’s all over!

Of course I’m just kidding. I do not believe any of those things I just wrote. But to listen to all the Laker Haters out there (and some “fans”) you would think all the above is true. So I am here to instill a little sanity into the conversation.

So let’s look at a few facts. I know, facts don’t have a big place in sports conversations but I’m going to give it a try.

Yes, the Lakers have lost two games in a row. Before that, they won eight games in a row. Now where I come from, eight is bigger than two. So the first streak is better than the last one. Also, I’m not sure if some of you people know it or not but the NBA Season is 82 games long. We’re a tenth of the way through the season and the Lakers have won 80% of their games so far. So if they keep up this pace they will only win 66 games. Losers!

Second, let’s take a look at the latest loss. The Phoenix Suns came into town Sunday and rained down a team record 22 3-pointers on the Lakers.  The Suns shot an unbelievable 55% from beyond the arc and only won the game by five points. Let that stat sink in for a second. The Suns have a record night shooting and the game was still in doubt until the last minute.

It kind of reminds me of Game 3 of the 2009 NBA Finals. The Orlando Magic shot 75% from the field in the first half and only won by 4. At that point I knew the Lakers would be alright.

I think this season is going to shape up the same way. The Lakers will lose a few games here and there but those teams that beat them will have to play their best game.

So all the Laker Haters can rejoice and clog up my Twitter timeline with smack talk after each loss. That’s okay.  I’m not going to worry until Game 7 of the 2011 NBA Finals. Just like I did last year.
