Jordan-Crawford-x-Carmelo-AnthonyCeltics player Jordan Crawford found himself in the middle of a controversy when he allegedly told Carmelo Anthony, “That motherfucker fucked your wife,” and the end of last night’s playoff game. I say “allegedly” only because to video of him mouthing off to Anthony after the Celtics’ 92-86 victory leaves a little ambiguity. Not much, but a little.

Anthony’s wife, La La Anthony, has chimed in on Instagram, saying, “Try again. You on the bench for a reason.” Presumably, this was directed towards Crawford. Deadspin.com has a nice report you should check out, with the video.

To his credit, Crawford has stuck to his story. He even tweeted out this earlier today:

See? He would never do something like that. Even though he was caught on camera doing just that.

It remains to be seen if this verbal scrum will be a distraction to Anthony and the Knicks and negatively impact their game or if it will energize them and help them close out Boston in Game 6. Given Carmelo Anthony’s history, I’d it can go either way.

wbcNBABy now the whole world knows that NBA player, Jason Collins, has come out of the closet. His announcement has been met with mostly positive comments. It has appeared that America has turned a very important corner in tolerance and acceptance. Of course, you knew it couldn’t last long.

Enter the Westboro Baptist Church. You know them, they’re the “God Hates Fags” people. And they really do not like Jason Collins or the NBA, for that matter.

They have decided that since the NBA is now rampant with homosexuals the are going to protest the playoff games of the Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Houston Rockets and The Chicago Bulls vs. New Jersey Nets. Here is their tweet announcing a new sign made especially for the NBA:

I’m not sure why they have to pick on poor Kevin Durant but I guess they really don’t need a reason. It should be pointed out that this “church” is basically made up of the family of the Reverend Fred Phelps (no relation to Michael Phelps). So it is kind of hard to take them seriously. But they do seem to get a hell of a lot of media coverage. I guess I’m guilty of enabling them, too.

They may hate Jason Collins, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and David Stern but there is one sports personality they like; Chris Broussard:

This is probably not the endorsement that Broussard wanted but I guess you have to take what you can get.

Oklahoma City and Chicago better get ready for an onslaught of literally 8-10 protesters descending on the arenas.

It didn’t take too long for someone at the Worldwide Leader to make a fool out of himself regarding the Jason Collins announcement. Chris Broussard came in right on cue to prove once again that he is an idiot.

This is from my good friends over at Deadspin.

Well, after ESPN had a fairly terrible morningcovering the Jason Collins story, it looked like the network was making progress this afternoon: Smart news hour Outside The Lines would expand to a full hour to discuss the NBA player’s announcement. Fantastic.

Or maybe not. OTL booked Chris Broussard to have a discussion with openly gay correspondent LZ Granderson, and it rapidly devolved into a talk about whether or not gay sex is sinful. Huh? (Broussard’s let his thoughts on this matter be known before).

By now we all have heard about Jason Collins’ announcement that he is gay. He’s the first active player in any American professional sport to come out of the closet.

Of course, everyone on Twitter has an opinion. Here are some of the tweets that are out there:

But enough of the support and understanding, I know you really want to read the hate. Here you are:

Sometimes I hate humanity.

jasoncollinsNBA player, Jason Collins, has come out as the first openly gay player in any of the big four professional American sports.

When I first heard the news of Collins coming out my first reaction wasn’t, “This is a great day for tolerance in sport and America,” nor was it, “Oh my god, this is going to bring down American and decent society as we know it.” My first reaction was, “Who the hell is Jason Collins?”

If you had the same reaction here is Jason Collins. He has played for the New Jersey Nets, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics and most recently, the Washington Wizards. This may be the reason that most people have never hear of him.

He is 34-years old and is currently a free agent. It is being reported that he is an “active NBA player” but in reality he has no team to play for. Thirty-four is pretty old by NBA standards and being a free agent probably makes it easier for Collins to come out. To me it seems like Collins is announcing this because he is about to retire.

Even though he says he wants to continue playing his age makes it very unlikely that any team will pick him up. Plus there will probably be some outcry from religious nuts towards any team that even considers signing Collins. There will probably be some very ignorant comments coming from players as well.

I think what Jason Collins has done is a great thing. I have always said that there are gay players in every professional sport. They have just been too afraid to come out for fear of reprisals and a fear that they may be committing career suicide.

It’s tough being the first person to do anything and Jason Collins has paved the way for other gay athletes.  Hopefully, the reaction to Collins’ announcement will be positive. I’m sure there will be some negative, hurtful comments coming from the usual suspects but overall I think America is ready for this.

I had no idea who Jason Collins was before today but I am positive that I will remember who he is for the rest of my life. Good luck, Jason, and thank you.

NBA players have STILL not learned that they can’t call refs or fans “fags.” And I’m not sure they ever will. (And yes, I’m actually using the word fag. I don’t censor. I think it’s important to use the words we’re talking about. I’ve done it before and I will continue to do it.)

This latest incident came to light when deadspin.com published tweets allegedly from Amare Stoudemire to a fan where he drops an F-Bomb on the fan.

Reportedly, the NBA is looking into this matter and I fully expect Amare to be fined just like Kobe Bryant and Jokim Noah were when they used the same slur.

I know a lot of people out there don’t think it’s a big deal for someone to use the word fag in a derogatory fashion. But it is a big deal. The NBA has a whole campaign that is against using homophobic slurs. And if it’s a big deal to the NBA you better believe David Stern is going to make sure it’s a big deal to the players.

So how did all this start?

Apparently the Knicks fan was trolling Amare and sent him this tweet; “you better come back a lot stronger and quicker to make up for this past season mannnnnn deadasss!!!” Now when it comes to nasty tweets sent to pro athletes, that’s pretty tame. Los Angeles Lakers’ Steve Blake and his family got death threats after he missed a game winning shot against the Oklahoma City Thunder in this year’s playoffs. Now that’s harsh.

So, it’s surprising to me that Amare would respond the way he did. I’m sure he received worse tweets when he put his hand through a piece of glass and sliced his hand open during the series versus the Miami Heat.

Maybe he was just having a bad day. Who knows? But he, and all other players, have to know that the NBA will not tolerate this kind of language.

To his credit, Amare did apologize. But it may be too little, too late. It’s going to be interesting to see how the league responds.

He’s going. He’s staying. He’s going. He’s staying. He wants the coach fired. He doesn’t want the coach fired. He’s going.

This is what we have had to put up with from (the soon-to-be-ex?) Orlando magic center Dwight Howard all season long. And we’re going to have to put up with it all summer, too.

It should come as no surprise that it is being reported that Dwight Howard wants out of Orlando. Again. Keep in mind that the Magic have fired head coach Stan Van Gundy (per Dwight’s request) and GM Otis Smith (probably per Dwight’s request, too). They have done all this just to appease their super diva center. And he’s still not happy.

If the Magic have any sense at all they will trade him as soon as possible. The longer Dwight stays, the more damage he can do to the organization. I have never seen a single player wreak havoc on an organization like this before. And that includes Terrell Owens and Latrell Sprewell.

It’s no secret that Howard desperately wants to play for the Brooklyn Nets. And if the NBA Lottery goes Brooklyn’s way, he may just get his wish.

The scenario goes like this; if the Nets win the Lottery (they have a 7.5% chance) they would trade the #1 pick plus some players to Orlando for Dwight Howard. That would make Brooklyn a contender with the duo of Deron Williams and Howard and the Magic could build around the presumptive #1 pick, Anthony Davis. Everybody wins.

The question is, will the NBA rig the lottery like they (allegedly) did for Michael Jordan and the Washington Wizards back in 2001?

For once I hope the fix is in because I don’t know how much more of the Dwight Howard saga I can take.
